IHM CHARISM
The spirit of an IHM School calls each person to a life of prayer, love and service, courtesy and hospitality.
In this school Jesus is the center and Mary, the model.
PHILOSOPHY
OF
OUR LADY OF FATIMA SCHOOL
Mindful of the great obligation of Holy Mother the Church in the matter of education of the whole child, Our Lady of Fatima School in Bensalem, PA, is dedicated to this cause through the mediums of both spiritual and secular branches of study. It is our earnest desire to produce Catholic, American children of the present generation who will be clear thinking, zealous, active men and women in the world of tomorrow. Through the constant daily guidance of our children, we hope to develop not only good leaders, but intelligent followers who can choose rightly and make decisions that will help them to "advance in wisdom, age and grace" as well as to be of service to our fellow men.
With these aims in mind all areas of learning must be based on the Catholic philosophy of education. The child composed of body and soul must be trained through the proper knowledge and use of the secular arts and sciences and fortified by the knowledge and practice of his faith.
We hope to send from our school Catholic teenagers who have learned to realize and appreciate the importance of their work and their potential ability to contribute by their praiseworthy conduct in public and private to the general well-being of their beloved country, the United States of America.
The general objectives of the curriculum prescribed are those of all Catholic Elementary Education:
1. To prepare the children for Christian Social living by inculcating habits and developing those faculties necessary to equip them to contribute their full share to the proper utilization of the created universe.
2. To awaken in youth a sense of moral responsibility for the right use of their God-given talents and a thirst for truth, both of which will lead them to their eternal goal.
Detailed Objectives:
1. To develop intelligent Catholics who have learned to acquire knowledge through the use of sources of information.
2. To develop spiritually vigorous Catholics who apply the truths they have learned to their own conduct.
3. To develop cultured Catholics who recognize beauty and appreciate its place in the Arts.
4. To develop healthy Catholics who have respect for their bodies, physically fit through cleanliness, and the proper kind of exercise and recreation
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
In addition to the daily class lessons in Religion, the following religious opportunities are provided:
The entire student body participates in Morning Assembly daily, prayer opportunities throughout the day, the Celebration of the Mass (at various times and on special Feasts of the year), and each class is given the opportunity to prepare the liturgy. Individual grades have the opportunity to attend weekday Masses in Chapel on a regular schedule.
During the year, the children have opportunities to celebrate the Sacraments of Penance, and Holy Eucharist. The children receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation at the appropriate grade levels. The students participate in special Liturgical Services and activities throughout the school year.
Since parents are the first teachers of their children, they play a basic and fundamental role in the religious education of their children. They teach mainly by example. It is important that parents support the religious education and values presented in the school. Parents have an obligation to:
Foster prayer in the home.
Give good example by living good moral lives.
Attend Mass each Sunday and holyday.
It is important that children see parents live the faith they profess
MISSION STATEMENT
Our Lady of Fatima School is a Roman Catholic Elementary School of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, dedicated to the religious, academic, and social education of its students. We dedicate ourselves to the teaching mission of the Church through devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary who leads us to a deeper understanding of the Gift of the Eucharist.
We commit ourselves to:
Nurturing a spiritual environment through private and communal prayer and proclaiming in word and action the Good News of Jesus Christ to all persons as expressed in the daily lives of the members of our community which draws and welcomes people into our way of life.
Respecting and motivating student of varying backgrounds, interests, and abilities to fulfill the special potential in each of them.
Offering an academic, social, and physical curriculum that will promote inquisitiveness, openness to change, and a commitment to life-long learning.
Fostering an awareness and understanding of social and global concerns that will require responsible leaders.
Providing varied opportunities for faculty and students to serve one another and encouraging service to local, national, and world communities.
Being Christ-like role models for our students and their families, instilling in them the desire to witness, by word and action, to the God who lives with all.
Aware of the Trinitarian dimension of our lives, we unite ourselves in the love of the Father and of the Son, through the Spirit who manifests that love in the hearts of all.
Non-Discrimination Policy
Our parish school admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at our school. Similar policies apply to the school staff. Our school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, its admission policies, or in any school administered program.
ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATION
ABSENCE
A student who has been absent from school must present a written excuse from a parent or guardian, which states the reason for the absence, and specifies the exact dates of the absence. This written excuse must be presented to the teacher immediately upon the return of the student to school. If a child does not bring a note, the child will be considered truant and marked accordingly on the roll slip. Pennsylvania State Law requires that students present a Doctor’s Note upon their return to school;
1) After any contagious disease.
2) After three days of absence.
A teacher may request a doctor’s note if a student is habitually absent. In the event of a child’s absence, the parent/ guardian must call the school (215-638-3256) before 7:45 AM. This is necessary for the child's safety and welfare.

Parents must inform the teacher and the School Office in writing of any change in address or phone number. This also includes the emergency numbers. If any emergency arises, the school must be able to contact the parent immediately.

NO STUDENT MAY LEAVE THE SCHOOL BUILDING AT ANY TIME WITHOUT A PARENT OR GUARDIAN. When picked up, the parent must sign the student out in the office and sign them in upon returning. Students are not permitted to leave the building during school hours with neighbors, friends, or parents of other classmates. All requests for must be in writing; verbal permission is not acceptable.

New uniforms should be purchased when a student outgrows or wears out articles of the uniform dress. Uniform swap is also available during the course of the year.

LATENESS
Punctuality is important for academic success. Lateness interferes with the student's learning, and causes disruption for the teacher and the class. Students who are late must report to the school office in order to be admitted to class. A record is kept of all lateness, and will require contact with the parents by the principal if any child consistently arrives at school late.
The Morning Bell is at 7:45 am. Children must be in the church by 7:45. Students may not be dropped off at school before 7:15 AM. This is for their safety, as no supervision is available before this time.
Punctuality is recorded on each student’s permanent record card. Lateness deprives a student of the opportunity to receive a Perfect Attendance Certificate.
:

TRANSFERS/RETURNS
If a child transfers for a legitimate reason he/she may be readmitted to Our Lady of Fatima School only if the teacher and principal agree. The final decision rests with the principal. No student who was a discipline problem will be readmitted to Our Lady of Fatima School.
TUITION POLICY
In order for the school to operate effectively and maintain high standards, we ask the financial assistance of the parents through tuition in addition to parish subsidy. It is a matter of justice that tuition be paid in full. Tuition and fees are to be paid in full before records, report cards, or other information is released. Any student who owes tuition or fees to Our Lady of Fatima School and transfers to another school will not receive any records until all fees are paid.
If tuition is not paid in full for current school year by the end of April, that child will not be permitted to return to school the following year unless all tuition bills for the previous year are paid. The Pastor will determine the amount of tuition for each school year.
Tuition is paid by one of three methods:
1 In full on the designated tuition nights
2 Twice per year at designated time
2 Monthly - July through April
SCRIP credit and Tuition grants will be applied to tuition cost. Purchase of SCRIP or a SCRIP fee is considered part of the Tuition for the school year.
Student report cards will be withheld until payments have been made. All scheduled fees must be paid.
CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

www.archdiocese-phl.org

Defacing books, loss of books or improper handling will result in the child paying a fee for the book. All students must use school bags.
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE
The computer technology committee, composed of parents and teachers, strives to place up-to-date hardware and software in individual classrooms. Meeting on an as needed basis, the committee sets long and short-term goals that are approved by the diocesan office.
GRADING AND ASSESSMENT
Class participation, home study, projects, quizzes, maintenance sheets, and frequent written assessments are combined to obtain a report card average. This average should show the students and their parents the achievements, as well as weaknesses in subject areas.
Report Cards are issued three times a year. Assessments are sent home regularly for parental review. If parents are not receiving assessments and portfolios, it is their responsibility to contact the teacher.
Some students have a modified curriculum in particular areas of the curriculum. Grades for these subjects are indicated with an "M" after each subject on the report card and permanent record card.
The primary purpose of any Catholic educational instruction is to enable all students to develop their spiritual, academic, and social abilities. It is of utmost importance to instill in each child a proper attitude toward school, teachers, their classmates and learning in genera
HOMEWORK
Homework is a reinforcement of the teaching presented in the classroom and a preparation for the next class day. Parents are asked to help their children develop good study habits. Written assignments should be checked for neatness and completeness. Study material should be reviewed. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia suggests the following time for homework each night:
Grades 1 and 2 30 minutes
Grades 3 and 4 60 minutes
Grades 5 and 6 90 minutes
Grades 7 and 8 120 minutes
Homework assignments (written, study, and upcoming assessments) should be faithfully recorded in the Student Planner. Parents should check the Student Planner and the Monthly Calendar in that Planner for communication from the teacher.

Students who display a learning difficulty and need accommodations may have their needs assessed by the school counselor, parent, teacher and principal. In order for modifications to be made in any subject area the student must be tested and diocesan rules for modifications followed. Copies of these regulations are in the principal’s office.
A modification plan includes a plan for the classroom teacher and one for the parent. Modifications are only possible when basic skills are acquired. School and parents are partners in education. Parents must be involved at home to reinforce the skills presented as school. See also Grading and Assessment.
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM
Since parents are the primary educators of their children they are encouraged to exercise their religious responsibilities, especially attending Mass. Parents, on the other hand, are the primary educators who establish the foundation upon which the teacher builds. Any parent who wishes to see the Principal or any teacher should send a note to the person involved, who will then contact you to set up a date and time for the conference. If a difficulty should arise concerning your child's conduct or academic work, please contact the teacher before you bring the matter to the attention of the Principal. Teachers may not accept phone calls nor meet with parents during school hours. No teacher will accept phone calls at home. Individual conferences are arranged with all parents at the first progress report. Parents are expected to attend these conferences.
Parents are not to visit classrooms before, during or after school without permission of the principal and an appointment with the teacher.

Your child should bring notice of needed medications to the classroom teacher. Medications are kept in the School Office or Nurse’s Office. Students should come to the office at the proper time to take medication.
If your child receives medication while in school, the following rules must be followed:
1. Parents or guardian must sign medication permission.
2. Any prescribed medication must be in the regular prescription bottle with the child's name on it.
3. Non-prescription medicine must be accompanied with WRITTEN and SIGNED instructions with the time and/or time interval from a physician and parents. This includes Tylenol. The schools stock generic Tylenol that can be administered when the appropriate notes are given to the School Nurse. A signed permission form for Tylenol should be provided each year for the School Nurse if you wish your child to take this medication.
4. Prescription medicine must be in the original container and accompanied by Doctor’s prescription.
5. An adult must bring an elementary student’s medication to school. Unused quantities cannot be sent home with the student and will be discarded at the end of the year.
EMERGENCY DRILLS & SITUATIONS
Drills for emergencies are required by law and are conducted on a regular basis. The purpose is to insure students’ safety. In the case of an actual emergency, students will call home or a chain call will be activated to notify parents.
Our Lady of Fatima School and Bensalem Township have explicit directives for both students and teachers in cases of emergency. With the teachers, students practice specific directives for fire drills, evacuation drills, Internal and external lockdowns, bomb scares, and weather related emergencies.
DISCIPLINE AND RESPECT
In guiding the child's growth in habits of virtue and in Christian attitudes, it is the school's policy to emphasize the positive rather than the negative. The word discipline comes from the same root as the word disciple. Hence, discipline is seen as something essentially positive, coming from each student following the example of Jesus and his teachings. The essence of Christian discipline is self-discipline. Sometime thoughtlessness arises on the part of a pupil and the classroom teacher must curb such behavior with appropriate measures. The closest cooperation between parents and teachers is vital in this important area of development.
Children learn best in an orderly, pleasant environment. Psychologists have known for decades that people in general and young people in particular, actually prefer to have clearly defined standards of accepted behavior as long as those standards are fair.
Our school policy aims at motivating children to be self-disciplined and responsible. Permissiveness and severity are two extremes, which we hope to avoid. All children are expected to comply with school directions and school policies. To accomplish this, the cooperation of parents is needed. We expect that their parents train our students in obedience, honesty, respect for teachers, staff, fellow students, and themselves. Students should show courtesy and respect for property.
Faculty members endeavor to listen to the problems of the children and attempt to arrive at workable solutions with firmness and kindness.
If a child's behavior demands Detention, the parent will be notified through a Detention Slip, which the parent is expected to sign and return to the teacher.
If a child is suspended a parental meeting with the teacher and principal is required. All parities must sign a probationary contract in order for the student to be readmitted to school. Another serious offense will merit expulsion.
DESTRUCTION OF SCHOOL PROPERTY
Children are expected to take proper care of all school property. They are forbidden to participate in any vandalism to anything around or on school property. Proper behavior and care for bathrooms, classrooms, and the school yard shows respect for our parish property.
DISCIPLINE CODE for Grades 1- 8
As order is essential to the effective management of any school, Our Lady of Fatima has a system of calendar warnings and conduct referrals to encourage personal responsibility and accountability in our students and to inform parents of unsatisfactory conduct and attitudes. The classroom teacher provides rules and expectations. Our goal is to provide a safe environment in which learning can take place, while developing a Christian attitude in our students.
No child is permitted to carry or chew gum in or on the school premises. This includes after school activities and at any time in the Church or Chapel.
Any student who is found smoking anywhere in uniform or smoking on school property will be suspended.
Students may not use any electronic equipment on school property or on school buses. Cell phones, carried with parental permission, must be turned OFF and kept in the school bag in the classroom closet. No I Pods or Games should be brought to school. If students are found in possession of these items, the items will be sent to the School Office and kept for a parent to pick up.
