Bensalem Police create a “MYSPACE” page
Predators “BEWARE”
Press Release
Prepared by Sergeant Andrew Aninsman
The Bensalem Twp Police Department would like to announce the creation of a departmental MySpace.com page as part of the national MySpace.com #1 friend program. This is the first time in Bucks County and one of the firsts in Pennsylvania, that a police department has created such a page. The page will act as a deterrent for online Child Predators praying on the Bensalem youth. The idea is to get children to add the department's page as their "#1" friend on MySpace making law enforcement visible on the child's page. The page can also be used as an information source for the public. Detective Joe Sciscio from the Bensalem Township Special victims unit worked diligently to create the Myspace.com which can now be accessed through the main page of the Police Departments web site. www.bensalempolice.org, and clicking on the icon:
From the prevalence of media attention recently being paid to children being sexually exploited from social networking websites, like MySpace, parents, children and law enforcement are all aware of the potential dangers that exist there. It was because of this danger, that the following idea was conceived. What if there was a way to deter predators from a child's MySpace in the same way that an alarm system deters burglars from your house?
Every local law enforcement agency should create a MySpace Page that can be used for education, reporting, and to reach out to children online. However, the more important job of this law enforcement MySpace page would be to act as a deterrent to predators. If local children added the local law enforcement page as a "friend" to the child's MySpace page, AND the child selected the local law enforcement agency to be their number one "friend", there would be obvious police prominence on the child's MySpace page. Now, if a predator came across this child's page, first, law enforcement would be clearly displayed on the page as soon as they visited the child's MySpace page and second, the child would have access to the local law enforcement agency with one click of the mouse.
Parents can encourage their kids to add the local police department as the number one "friend" as a condition of being allowed to have a MySpace page.
Our goal is to help deter predators from contacting children. Also, it is not a bad thing to have a police officer as your friend.
